Dynamic positioning system: types and working principle

A dynamic positioning system of a ship plays a pivotal role in monitoring the natural incidences that take place offshore and also, helps the ships to maintain its position in the deep sea by indicating about the wind and the wave data. Without this system, a ship may lose its control and mishaps may happen. Through dynamic positioning, a ship doesn’t require the usage of anchors to maintain its course in the deep waters. Why is Dynamic Positioning Used?

Dynamic Positioning is commonly used in research ships and drilling vessels which need to venture into the deepest parts of the ocean and sea. In the deepest part of the sea, the wind and waves tend to be continuously altering. In this scenario, it’s a very tiresome job for a ship’s crew to lay the anchors. A ship which is equipped with dynamic positioning can easily know about the changes in the wind and the waves. This helps the ships to alter the course suitably without compromising on its main purpose.

Ships which come with dynamic positioning are independent of anchors and other support systems. An effective dynamic positioning system enables the use of pushers and propellers and thus, it makes the ship stay on course and steady even in the fluctuating winds and waves. How do Dynamic Positioning Ships work?

The working process of a dynamic positioning system is quite simple and facile. A control panel notes the wind and the wave fluctuation and accordingly, sends appropriate signals to the propellers so that the ship can remain steady. There are, three different levels of dynamic positioning that can be used

Level I Dynamic Positioning System

This is the most basic and simple dynamic positioning system which doesn’t have advanced tools like other two dynamic positioning systems.

Level II Dynamic Positioning System

The ships which comprise of level II dynamic positioning system contains high-end computer applications and diving watercraft (for any major problem in the deep sea).

Level III Dynamic Positioning System

A ship with a Level III dynamic positioning contains similar equipment like a Level II dynamic positioning system but with an emergency back-up. Generally, oil tankers which used to drill in the deep-sea area are equipped with a Level III dynamic positioning system.
