Gyro repeater: a prerequisite part of marine vessel
Gyro repeater is a navigational compass (under the control of a gyroscope) which indicates true north. A gyrocompass is an imperative instrument in all marine ships or naval vessels. This can detect the direction of true north and not the magnetic north. Gyro compass has the following units,
Master Compass: With the help of gyroscope, it discovers and maintains the true north reading.
Repeater Compasses: These receive and point to the true direction transmitted electrically from the Master Compass.
Course Recorder: This makes a continuous record of the manoeuvring on a moving strip of paper.
Control Panel: Governs the electrical operation of the system and determines the running condition by utilizing a suitable meter.
Voltage Regulator: this can maintain the constant supply of the ship to the motor-generator.
Alarm Unit: This indicates the failure of the ship’s supply.
Amplifier Panel: This regulates and controls the follow-up system.
Motor Generator: Motor generator converts the ship’s DC supply to AC. This also energizes the compass equipment.
The Gyrocompass system applications are based on two primary characteristics and they are,
Gyroscopic Inertia: This is the tendency of any revolving body to uphold its plane of rotation.
Precession: This is a property which causes the gyroscope to move especially when a couple is applied. But instead of moving in the direction of the couple, it moves at right angles to the axis of the applied couple.
These two properties and the utilization of the Earth’s two natural forces, rotation and gravity help the gyrocompass seek true north.
